Issues Vinyl Siding Can Face During Cold Weather

December 3, 2020 by surefire-admin

According to stucco repair experts, vinyl siding is one of the most popular siding materials on the market. After all, not only are they affordable but they’re also durable and incredibly long-lasting when properly maintained. However, despite the fact that it’s one of the strongest siding materials available, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s invincible. In fact, during the winter season when the weather is cold, siding pros say that it’s possible for vinyl siding to experience a few issues.

Issues Vinyl Siding Can Face During Cold Weather

These include::

Brittleness

Vinyl siding is essentially made of plastic. So, like any plastic product, it can become sensitive to temperature changes that come with the seasons. This is where one of the cold weather issues of vinyl siding comes in; if the material is exposed to below freezing temperatures, you can expect it to become brittle and tough. Once this happens, it can be easier for the boards to sustain cracks and damages as time goes by, which in turn can allow leaks and pests into your home.

Wind Blow-Off

For your vinyl siding to effectively work, it has to be properly installed and nailed in, especially since it’s a particularly lightweight material. This is because if your siding isn’t correctly nailed into your home, strong winds can easily blow it off from your home. If the boards are nailed in too tightly, rising temperature can cause the siding to buckle and pull away from the sides of your home, leaving it vulnerable to wind blow-off. With that in mind, be sure to make it a point to only have a professional siding contractor install your siding on your home.

Alternative Materials

On the other hand, if you live in an area that constantly faces frigid temperatures, then vinyl siding may not be the best material of choice for your home. Otherwise, you may have to constantly repair or replace your siding if you opt to use vinyl as the material. Instead, consider using fiber cement for your siding material instead. According to experts, since fiber cement is made of wood fibers, cement and silica, it has better durability and doesn’t experience the same expansion and contraction issues that vinyl siding usually does.
